There are "foreign fighters" (read: jihadists) on both sides of the Syrian civil war. Clearly, the Assad regime is the worse of two evils at this moment in time because of its connection to Iran and Hezbollah. If he goes though, no one has any idea of what will fill the power vacuum. There's little chance of the next Syrian government being pro-US though. These things always become Pied Piper-type situations.

Not really. A ton weren't wiped out, though a few had some weeks of clean up. I was there and saw those refineries and chem plants online and even picked up from a couple of them. Oil companies have used that excuse for years and it's getting a bit lame. They've claimed to be off line doing "maintenance" while their chemical emissions output shows they are in full production, or have shut down refineries while claiming to need tax breaks to build more refining capacity.

I would say that two wars and the shut down of one of the most productive oil regions in the world may have contributed, but then you'd have to remember that they were Cheney's - excuse me - Bush's wars and would have to accept that he should be blamed for the price gouging I had to suffer through.

And I don't call secret meetings between Cheney and the heads of Exxon-Mobile, Texaco, Shell and British Petroleum an energy plan. More like a planning meeting to steal someone else's energy. And one that went horribly wrong about five minutes after some moron declared "Mission Accomplished!"
